One day trip to Kithulgala river and Makandawa Forest

You can reach Kithulgala, small town in Colombo – Nuwaraeliya road after 3 hour drive from Colombo. You can get into the forest by taking the road to Kithulgala Rest House, and then turn left to a car park. You can take a swim in the river close to Kithulgala Rest House or take a boat ride to the other side of the river and there you will reach Makandawa Forest Reserve (195 hectares).

Key attractions in this area includes Natural swimming and bathing in Kelani River, small but biodiversity rich Kithugala Rain Forest (Makandawa Forest Reserve) and bird watching

You can also observe Serendib Scops Owl, discovered recently in this forest. If you need to observe this nocturnal animal you have to visit the forest at night.

Kithugala is also famous for white water rafting.
