Homestay in Sri Lanka

Homestay in Sri Lanka

Home stays have become a popular alternative to traditional hotels since it helps you to experience the real culture of Sri Lanka, as the tourist lives with the family for some part of his or her journey and enjoy the culture and tradition of the land. This helps the traveler to understand and experience the life of people in the visiting country.

Sri Lanka Tourism, an official body which promotes tourism in Sri Lanka recently launched the Home Stay and Bungalow program. This is in addition to the presently available 1-5 star class hotels, guest houses, Ayurveda hotels, eco lodges, apartment hotels, boutique villas and hotels, and camping sites.

Sri Lanka Tourism said that they have launched this homestay program to provide clean, comfortable and affordable supplementary accommodation to tourists. Tourists will have an opportunity of an engaging experience of customs, traditions, authentic cuisine and other attractions of the location, while staying with the local host, thus giving them a memorable experience during their holiday.   Home Stay and Bungalows are approved by the Standards & Quality Assurance division of Sri Lanka Tourism, and they are published in their official website.

They categorized Homestay programs according to 6 themes:  Sun and Sand Home Stays, Mist and Hills, Adventure, Culture and Heritage, Wildlife and Nature and Fun and Roving.

Other websites such as HomeStayFinder also list some homestay places in the country. Sri Lanka also offers programs for travelling students to do volunteering work and spend their gap year educational programs.

it wasn’t too long that i was settling into my homestay in Galle, Sri Lanka that my host family mentioned a trip to Yala National Park. Lakmalee’s (home stay acting mom) mom and dad have a hotel in Tissa, the town next to the park, and they offered a ride (4.5 hours) that next saturday. Prianthya (dad of homestay) said its really not too far from Ella-a town that is in the high hill country of central Sri Lanka and on the seanic train route. i figured, it would be a fine time to go up and explore the country. i didn’t have a guide book or a clue where and how to navigate or even find a guide book in this town…so, i went to the beach to chill out and see what came up.
